Program Description:

Program Overview

The University of Glasgow is the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world. It dates back from 1451 when King James II of Scotland persuaded Pope Nicholas V to grant a lead seal, or bull, authorizing Bishop William Turnbull of Glasgow to set up a university. Today, the University of Glasgow is one of the top 100 universities in the world with an international reputation for its research and teaching, playing an important role in the cultural and commercial life of the country. It is one of the UK's largest universities with almost 16,000 undergraduate and 4000 postgraduate students. Although firmly rooted in the west of Scotland, the University of Glasgow is nevertheless an international institution, attracting students from 80 countries. Location

Glasgow is one of Europe’s liveliest cities with a vibrant and colorful social scene; some of the best shopping in the world; thriving music and performance venues; and some increasingly renowned international festivals. It was named one of the top ten ‘must-see’ destinations for 2006 (and the only one in Europe) by Frommer’s Travel Guide and remains the cultural center of Scotland. Scottish people are known for their friendly, welcoming character, which makes it a great place to study abroad. Glasgow has something for everyone!

Whether your passion is history, architecture, music, sports or shopping you’ll find plenty to interest you. Glasgow is Scotland's largest city with a population of 600,000. Glasgow means 'dear green place' in Gaelic; accordingly, there are around 80 parks, more than any other city in Europe. It is ranked as the best UK shopping center outside London and has 14 free museums and art galleries. Additionally, it is a major center for sports, including football, golf, sailing, hiking and climbing. Churches, mosques and synagogues are all within easy reach of the city center. With a major international airport 20 minutes from the city and excellent transport links with the rest of Scotland and the UK, travel possibilities are endless.

Academics

Courses are available in general education and various disciplines. Students will take 3 or 4 modules (classes) equivalent to 12-15 Stout credits. A full load at Glasgow is equal to 120 SCOTCAT credits per year, or 60 per semester. This is equivalent to 30 American University System credits per year. The SCOTCAT system can be divided by 4 to give an approximate equivalent credit.

Art & Design Students
To enhance awareness and promote study abroad experiences, Art and Design study abroad students, studying for one semester or more, will be required to exhibit their art & design work in a group exhibition in the Gallery 209, upon their return, as organized by the Art & Design Department's International Studies Committee. Students in short-term programs are not required but encouraged to participate. While the work is on exhibit, students will be expected to organize the appropriate faculty and the program director to assess their work for related study abroad credits, as needed. Students returning from HAWK will exhibit their work in September and students returning from all other programs in February. Students will also be responsible for submitting a complete electronic portfolio (CD, DVD) of their work to the Program Office by the end of their exhibition week. Students will not receive equivalent Stout credits until the exhibition and electronic portfolio requirements are satisfied.

Living Arrangements

Students live in residence halls on campus or in university-managed apartments near campus. Students generally have private bedrooms but share the bathroom, kitchen and lounge with four to six other students. Each residence hall or building has a receptionist, laundry and social areas.

Students prepare most meals at their accommodation, but there are snack bars on campus where students can purchase food items. Glasgow also has a wealth of restaurants featuring cuisine from all over the world.

Passport/Visa/Travel

Passport: Students will need to have a passport study in Scotland. The current passport fee is $135. If you already have a valid U.S. passport, be sure to check the dates of validity – your passport must be valid six months beyond your return date.

Visa: Students studying in Scotland less than six months and not partaking in an internship or work do not need to apply for a student visa. Students studying in Scotland for longer than six months or less than six months, but partaking in work or an internship will be required to apply for a student visa. The current visa fee is £200. The Office of International Education will be able to assist you with this process.

Travel: Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to and from Scotland. Depending on the starting and ending date of the term, students may have the option of traveling in Scotland before or after the program.
