Program Overview
Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is one of the UK's most internationally distinguished universities. It has a student population of around 14,000 and an excellent reputation for teaching quality and research, producing four Nobel Prize winners over the years.Students are attracted to University of Aberdeen’s tradition which is rooted in a 500 year history. The University is also at the forefront in many areas of arts, social sciences, computer science, engineering and technology, and in ground-breaking disciplines focused firmly on the 21st century, such as Bio-Medical Computing Science.
The University has a beautiful central campus where ancient buildings sit side by side with modern, newly refurbished, first-class laboratories, up-to-date computing facilities and the latest library technology.
Location
Aberdeen is nestled on the coast between the rivers Dee and Don. It is a compact city with a population of 216,000. Renowned for its splendid granite architecture, it sparkles like a jewel on the edge of the North Sea, bordered by cultivated farmland, wild moors, beautiful beaches and rugged hills. Aberdeen is also a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, welcoming business people and their families from throughout the world.It has much to offer in the way of entertainment and leisure, at a range of costs to suit every pocket. The city center has several busy shopping areas as well as a wide choice of nightclubs, wine bars, traditional pubs and restaurants. Culturally, the city attracts international companies performing ballet, theater, opera and classical music. There are excellent sports facilities providing all sorts of activities from golf to horseback riding and windsurfing, as well as a range of national league sports for those who prefer to watch.
There are miles of golden beaches, dunes and cliffs, which give shelter to great colonies of seabirds and winter migrants. The nearby Cairngorm mountains offer superb opportunities for hiking, mountaineering and skiing, and rivers such as the Dee, the Don, the Ythan and the Ugie offer fishing, rowing, canoeing, as well as breathtaking scenery.
Academics
Students will take 3 or 4 modules(classes) equivalent to 12 Stout credits. A full load at Aberdeen is equal to 120 SCOTCAT credits per year, or 60 per semester (This is equivalent to 30 American University System credits per year. The SCOTCAT system can be divided by 4 to give an approximate equivalent credit.)
Living Arrangements
Aberdeen offers a mixture of residence halls. Hillhead Halls is the student village on the bank of the River Don. Hillhead has traditional halls and a number of self-catering flats with facilities for disabled students. Student facilities include a shop, launderettes, floodlit all-weather tennis courts and a football pitch. A frequent bus service runs to the main campus and the city center.Passport/Visa/Travel
Passport: Students will need to have a passport study in Scotland. The current passport fee is $135. If you already have a valid U.S. passport, be sure to check the dates of validity – your passport must be valid six months beyond your return date.Visa: Students studying in Scotland less than six months and not partaking in an internship or work do not need to apply for a student visa. Students studying in Scotland for longer than six months or less than six months, but partaking in work or an internship will be required to apply for a student visa. The current visa fee is £200. The Office of International Education will be able to assist you with this process.
Travel: Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to and from Scotland. Depending on the starting and ending date of the term, students may have the option of traveling in Scotland before or after the program.
