Fontys University

Program Overview
Program Cost

Fontys University offers high quality programs that combine theory with practical experience.  More than 36,000 students have chosen Fontys University as their educational provider, making it the largest higher educational institution in the Netherlands.  Teaching is carried out in a small-scale environment so that attention is focused on a student’s personal development. At the same time students are able to profit from the huge diversity offered by a large institution. Because of its location on the border of Germany and Fontys University’s International focus, the student population is extremely diverse with a high number of German students and others from around the world.  Programs offered in English include: International Business, Marketing, and Economics and Software Engineering.  For more information about the University of Fontys, visit their website.

Location: The International Campus of Fontys University is located in Venlo, Netherlands, which is on borders of southeastern Netherlands and Germany.  Venlo has approximately 90,000 inhabitants and became an established city around 1343. Due to its location on the River Maas, it was able to develop into a thriving place of commerce at this early stage.  The Venlo area has an abundance of natural beauty, located between several national parks: the German-Dutch Maas-Schwalm-Nette Park, Maasduinen National Park and the Groote Peel National Park.  The banks of the Maas River are also a favorite location for picnicking or strolling. With a vision on its ‘green’ environment, there is a wealth of ‘green’ inside the city itself.

Every Venlo resident can be in the heart of the natural environment within ten minutes by bicycle.  Recreational opportunities in Venlo are also plentiful for participants and spectators alike. There are several quality golf courses around the city. Venlo also offers plenty of entertainment: theaters, cinemas, pubs and bars. There is a historic shopping center with a wide variety of shops combined with authentic bars, restaurants and pavement cafés. Many museums, theaters, cinemas and traditional carnivals make Venlo a regional entertainment center.

Fontys offers business programs taught in English. The average workload per semester at FIHE is 30 ECTS credits. Students will meet with their program director or academic adviser to select courses that will meet degree requirements at UW-Stout and take the equivalent of 12 semester credits.

European Business Summer Project (EBSP): Universitat de Vic (Spain), Bern University of Applied Sciences (Switzerland) and Fontys International Business School (the Netherlands) have joined hands and created a special program that will offer a unique European experience. During a period of 25 days, you will visit the three countries and you will work on a project in teams. In all three countries, you will learn about the ins and outs of the different business cultures. You will also visit companies and there will of course be time for a social program as well. Students will gain 3 credits for the program. More information can be found at this link.

Students mostly live in single rooms in off-campus student housing and share bathroom and kitchen facilities. The International Office at Fontys University will assist students with finding a place to rent then you will sign a contract with that rental company much like renting an apartment in Wisconsin. Most students commute to campus by bicycles and a bus service is also available. There is a cafeteria on campus but students generally prepare breakfast and dinner at their residence.

Passport: Students will need to have a passport study in the Netherlands. The current passport fee is $135. If you already have a valid U.S. passport, be sure to check the dates of validity – your passport must be valid six months beyond your return date.

Visa: Students will need to have a visa to study in the Netherlands. The current cost of a visa is €433. The Office of International Education can assist you with this process.

Travel: Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to and from the Netherlands. Depending on the starting and ending date of the term, students may have the option of traveling in Europe before or after the program.

Program Cost

To help you to prepare for your semester abroad the Office of International Education has created semester budget sheets for your reference. These budget sheets are only an estimation and actual expenses may vary depending on changes in currency exchange rates, tuition increases, airfare and personal spending habits. We suggest that you set up a personalized budget to follow for the duration of your program. To view the estimated budget sheet please click here.

We strongly encourage you to print this budget sheet, and set-up a meeting with your financial aid counselor early during the application process to discuss how you will be paying for the program. Students who are eligible for financial aid may use such aid to help pay for all of the costs outlined on the budget sheet. Give your financial aid counselor a copy of the budget sheet for your program so your financial award can be adjusted to take into account the increased costs.
