International Health Insurance

All students traveling on UW-Stout sponsored study abroad programs are covered by the UW System mandatory health insurance policy through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI). The cost of this coverage is $35/month and is included in the study abroad program fee.

Students who wish to extend their travel time before or after their study abroad program dates, can purchase additional coverage directly through CISI.

Read the CISI Insurance Coverage Brochure for detailed coverage information.

Passport Details

You need a passport (book) to travel anywhere outside the United States. Passport cards are not valid for flying to/from Canada and Mexico, therefore it is suggested that you obtain the passport book as it is most appropriate for international travel.

More information on obtaining and renewing passports can be found on the U.S. State Department website. The current cost of a passport book is $135. If you need your passport in a hurry, you should expect to pay $60-$100 for expedited service.

If you already have a valid U.S. passport be sure to check the dates of validity. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date.

Visas

A visa is an endorsement, either a stamp or electronic, from a foreign government that permits you to enter the country for a specified reason and length of time. The visa application is typically completed prior to departure and can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

Once you are accepted to a study abroad program, the Office of International Education will assist you with the visa application process. The visa application process and requirements vary by country. A great resource is Perry International http://www.perryvisa.com/webPages/visa.php

Embassy Registration

Once you have been accepted to study abroad and have finalized your travel arrangements, we strongly encourage you to take a few moments and register yourself with the local U.S. Embassy in your host country.

Once you register your travels with the U.S. Embassy, you will receive updates on the most current information about the country(ies) where you will be traveling or living. The local Embassy will also be able to provide better assistance in the case of an emergency, whether it is a natural disaster or your passport is lost or stolen.
