Financing Your Study Abroad Program

The information below describes generally how the cost estimates for these programs are determined. There are two types of overseas programs -- EXCHANGE programs and DIRECT ENROLL programs:

· On EXCHANGE programs, students pay regular tuition and institutional fees to UW-Stout, not the host university. Housing, airfare and personal expenses are the responsibility of the student.

· On DIRECT ENROLL programs, students pay a "program fee" in lieu of tuition at UW-Stout. The program fee may include other costs such as tuition, housing, meals and transportation.

Please refer to the budget sheets on the program pages. Keep in mind that costs vary from program to program, and should be considered as a minimum estimate. Changes in currency exchange rates, additional travel and your personal lifestyle choices will influence your actual costs.

Financing the National Student Exchange

On the National Student Exchange, you pay your normal tuition and fees to UW-Stout. Fees which are assessed as a condition of enrollment are paid to your host campus (e.g., laboratory courses, general service, computer, technology, art and photography supplies). Room and meals are always paid to your host campus. You are responsible for transportation, personal expenses, and sightseeing opportunities while on exchange.

Students are encouraged to seek grant and scholarship opportunities through the Student Research Fund and the Stout University Foundation. A limited number of study abroad grants are available to eligible Wisconsin residents who are participating in the NSE program outside of the United States.

Financial Aid
Students who are eligible for financial aid may use such aid to help pay for the costs of study abroad and National Student Exchange programs offered by UW-Stout. Give your financial aid counselor a copy of the cost estimates for your  program so your award can be adjusted to take into account the increased costs. If you have not applied for financial aid and think you might be eligible, contact the Financial Aid Office for information and application forms.

We strongly encourage you to seek outside funding for your  program. Keep in mind that the deadlines for funding sources vary and many require applications to be submitted at least one year before traveling abroad. Information regarding external funding opportunities is available on the Grants and Scholarships page of this site.
